Danni Q. Watson

Sport: Football
School: T. N. Tatem Middle
Year Level: M3

Why did you choose this physical activity/sport? At first, my parents signed me up for football and a bunch of other sports and activities. I choose football in the end because I feel a passion for this sport. Participating in a team sport is like having another family. I also like how this sport makes me think about all the playing options which gets me thinking and learning more.

Number of years you have participated in this sport/physical activity? Almost ten years, I started in the BYSP and moved to the Somerset Cricket Club girls program when I was eight. I now play on the boy’s team at Somerset and with the National Academy.

How do you stay motivated? Realizing that I am role model keeps me motivated as well as the goals I have set for myself. I would like to play Division 1 and professional football. With these goals in mind, I stay focused and make sure that I go to training. My National Academy coaches also play a huge role as well as how girl’s football is growing.

How do you fuel your body for your sport, in-season events and training? I do a lot of training and events so I have to ensure I am always drinking water and eating energy foods like pasta. I also drink chocolate milk after hard training for protein and I try to get lots of rest.

What do fitness and a healthy lifestyle mean to you? It is important to me because it means feeling good and maintaining a high level of performance. With the National Academy, I have learned the importance of what you eat and drink and the effect it has on your performance level.

Leticia Ferreira

Sport: Volleyball
School: Mount Saint Agnes
Year Level: Grade 12

Why did you choose this physical activity/sport? When I started playing volleyball in grade 8, I just fell in love with it. It is an activity that not only requires the physical aspect, but also requires a strong mindset. We are required to play as a team, where we cannot focus only on one player's ability. this interests me because I have always been the type of person who worked well with others. For this sport, you need to be able to see all the possibilities the team can achieve and what is the best for everyone else. What number of years you have participated in this sport/physical activity? I have been practicing this sport for 5 years.

How do you stay motivated? Watching videos from the Olympics, or from my favorite teams across the world usually motivates me. It shows me all things I need to improve in order to reach their level. Every time I step into the gym to practice and I see all the older players around me who know so much more than me give me a feeling that I can acquire that knowledge one day, but it has to start now. At every practice I have, every mistake is a new lesson learned. I try to strive for my best, where I don't give up easily.

How do you fuel your body for your sport, in-season events and training? I usually try to eat as healthy as I can, where vegetables and fruits never leave my diet. I try to refuel my body after practice with some proteins, carbs and vegetables. Usually in the morning, before practice, I will have something that gives me enough energy to last through the entire practice. Sometimes I take a granola bar, or a banana with me to practice. During school days I tend to make healthier choices, such as whole grains and foods that are not fried or greasy.

What do fitness and a healthy lifestyle mean to you? Fitness and healthy lifestyle means everything to me. As an athlete, I need to take care of my body to make sure that I am prepared for the next challenge. I never realize how much being healthy could impact someone's life until I started having 5 practices a week. It was hard to adapt at first, where I had to try new types of food, and break some habits. However, after getting used to this lifestyle it is hard to stop! Adapting to a healthy life style was the best decision I made!

How do you stay motivated? I stay motivated by setting realistic goals.

How do you fuel your body for your sport, in-season events and training? I have a balanced diet, and eat plenty of food to provide me with the energy I need. I also drink a lot of water. What do fitness and a healthy lifestyle mean to you? If I stay fit and healthy it means my body functions better and as a result I’m more likely to reach my goals.
